More on VuFind

Dom, 06/06/2010 - 22:17
I wrote an entry on yufind the other day, noting its use of xISBN to cluster editions in results. yufind is an implementation of VuFind. Here is another example of the clustering: Villanova. As Till Kinstler points out in a comment, and as William Denton notes in a discussion of... dempsey http://orweblog.oclc.org

A web-siting at Yale: other editions and xISBN

Lun, 31/05/2010 - 05:12
I was looking at the Vufind implementation of the Yale University Library catalog - yufind - and was interested to see that it implements a link to OCLC's xISBN service to pull together other editions of a displayed result. Here is an example where several versions of Krapp's Last Tape... dempsey http://orweblog.oclc.org

'Reading at Library-scale'/'distant reading'

Lun, 31/05/2010 - 03:56
Franco Moretti has an interesting short book called Graphs, maps, trees: abstract models for literary history. He proposes a way of reading literary history which involves abstracting patterns across large stretches of a literary field rather than examining "concrete, individual works". In particular, he works with three organizing models: graphs,... dempsey http://orweblog.oclc.org

Return on attention and Current Cites

Lun, 31/05/2010 - 02:13
I was quite taken with the phrase "return on attention" while reading The Power of Pull a while ago. I was also interested in the deprecation of the term information overload. It's not so much about finding which information is most valuable, as many of those who fret about information... dempsey http://orweblog.oclc.org

Googling

Dom, 30/05/2010 - 19:52
Google revamped its home page a while ago, highlighting a little more some additional features such as its wonder wheel, related searches, social (which searches among your 'friends' on various sites), nearby, and so on. I find the ability to limit by the date of pages in results quite useful... dempsey http://orweblog.oclc.org

Reading lists, citation management and bibliographic tissue

Dom, 23/05/2010 - 02:24
Here is something I wrote a couple of years ago under the title Personal reference collections as digital libraries. A little updating of examples and I think it still holds: We will see much more activity connecting user environments and bibliographic resources. I am thinking of citation managers, reading lists,... dempsey http://orweblog.oclc.org

A note about Tracey Thorn

Sab, 22/05/2010 - 04:18
A little off topic ... I have been listening to Tracey Thorn's new album, Love and its opposite. Here are several things ... It has been available for listening for a while on the label site, and is embedded elsewhere. Videos of live home recordings are available for some songs... dempsey http://orweblog.oclc.org

A spectacle

Dom, 16/05/2010 - 21:56
I have been wearing glasses for thirty years or so. I ordered a new pair yesterday, and when I got home I had a look at all my previous pairs. Here they are: I am sure it says something about me ........ dempsey http://orweblog.oclc.org

Aura

Dom, 16/05/2010 - 15:25
John Naughton has a nice column in The Observer today. He talks about how as part of welcoming Dan Cohen to Cambridge, the University Library prepared a display around Newton's Principia. John enjoys the experience ... I've owned a beautifully produced facsimile of the Principia for decades, so it wasn't... dempsey http://orweblog.oclc.org

Research analytics

Dom, 16/05/2010 - 01:26
Analytics is big business. Organizations are increasingly turning to the analysis of transactional and other data to inform decision-making. Websites are refined based on analysis of traffic. Companies may use analytics to optimize inventory. And so on. I was struck by the parallel with business analytics when reading some brochures... dempsey http://orweblog.oclc.org

QR codes again ...

Lun, 03/05/2010 - 03:50
Andy Walsh of the University of Huddersfield gave a very nice presentation on QR Codes at the recent EMTACL10 conference at NTNU in Trondheim. I particularly liked his introduction in which he provided some motivating context for his work. He noted that as library spaces became places for social activity,... dempsey http://orweblog.oclc.org

People are entry points too ... redux

Lun, 03/05/2010 - 00:32
I have been reading The power of pull by John Hagel III, John Seely Brown and Lang Davison. They provide a broad framework for thinking about current changes and how people and firms should position themselves to operate effectively. A major part of this is a shift from managing 'knowledge... dempsey http://orweblog.oclc.org

The Reader and the Law

Sab, 01/05/2010 - 01:24
Eddi Reader is a Scottish singer, formerly of Fairground Attraction. I was aware of Fairground Attraction but really only began listening to Eddi Reader a couple of years ago and she has become a favorite. [Worldcat Identity][Soundunwound]. She sings some wonderful songs, one of which I link to below. Her... dempsey http://orweblog.oclc.org

Focusing on the distinctive ...

Lun, 19/04/2010 - 17:41
Links to a story in yesterday's NYT are popping up around the place. Called Companies Slowly Join Cloud-Computing, it looks at recent moves by companies to source computing capacity in the cloud. There is some emphasis on Amazon's services, but others are also discussed. The thing which has jumped out... dempsey http://orweblog.oclc.org
